Types of braces

At Orthosmile, we are a leader in cutting-edge orthodontics and offer many different types of braces to suit your orthodontic needs. Our three practices across West London offer all types of braces listed below.

Traditional metal braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common method of orthodontic treatment and can be used to treat a wide variety of dental problems, including teeth that are crooked or misaligned, teeth that are overcrowded, large gaps between teeth and teeth which are rotated or protrusive. They consist of metal brackets that are attached to the teeth and which are connected by a wire. The braces put pressure on the teeth, gently correcting their position, and as the position of the teeth changes the wire is replaced with increasingly sturdier ones, making sure the correction is as long-lasting as possible.

Traditional metal braces will be more visible than the more inconspicuous options such as ceramic braces, but they are much less expensive. Furthermore, modern brackets are smaller and less obtrusive than ever before, making the experience of having the braces more comfortable and less troublesome.

Clear ceramic braces

For a more discreet, inconspicuous option for those who wish to have orthodontic treatment with the same effectiveness as fixed metal braces, clear braces, made out of tooth-coloured ceramic, are an ideal option and are available as a treatment option at Orthosmile.

These blend in perfectly with the teeth and when also paired with tooth-coloured wire, can become barely noticeable. These are a great alternative to conventional fixed metal braces for those patients who do not like the metallic appearance of train tracks on their teeth.

Suitable for children and adults alike, these versatile appliances are suitable for the treatment of most orthodontic problems and are just as effective as their metal counterparts.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are fixed metal braces that are attached behind the teeth, making them completely invisible braces to anyone who isn’t actually looking right down into your mouth. They apply pressure to the back of the teeth, rather than the front, correcting your teeth without intruding on your appearance and even allowing you to clearly see your new smile blossom as the treatment takes its course.

Since these braces are fixed, they can tackle more complex problems that invisible braces are ill-suited for, and also have the advantage of being quicker than removable braces. However, lingual braces can take longer than traditional or ceramic braces. Your specialist orthodontist at Orthosmile can advise you whether lingual braces are suitable for your treatment requirements.

Self-ligating (Damon®) braces

Self-ligating braces are a new clinically proven treatment system that align your teeth and create a beautiful smile without any elastic bands or ties. The combination of self-ligating Damon braces and ‘shape memory’ wires move the teeth faster and require fewer visits to your orthodontist. By using these special wires and brackets, it reduces friction and pressure, and therefore are more effective and cause less discomfort.

The absence of elastic ties also makes dental hygiene easier during treatment as they do not collect plaque. So not only do self-ligating Damon braces result in faster treatment times (4-6 months on average), but also provide a more comfortable treatment experience.
