Types of dental bridges

There are four main types of dental bridges. These include:

  • Traditional fixed bridges: A traditional fixed bridge is the most common type of dental bridge. This uses two or more crowns and a filler tooth connected together. The crowns are placed on healthy surrounding teeth to hold the bridge in place.
  • Maryland dental bridges: Maryland dental bridges are usually recommended for missing front teeth. They are ceramic or metal bridges with porcelain fused to them. This helps them look natural when you smile.
  • Implant-supported bridges: If anchoring to existing teeth with crowns won’t work, we can use dental implants on either side of the gap instead. This is called an implant-supported bridge.
  • Cantilever bridges: If you only have one good tooth to anchor to, or the missing teeth are in the front of your mouth, we may recommend a Cantilever bridge. With a Cantilever bridge, the filler tooth is only connected to surrounding teeth on one side.

How does getting a dental bridge work?

We generally need at least two appointments to fit your dental bridge: one to prepare the area, and another for placement.

At your first visit, we will shape the surrounding teeth to get them ready for crowns or implants. We will also take scans or impressions to mould your custom dental bridge precisely to suit your smile. In the meantime, we can give you a temporary bridge to wear.

At your second appointment, we will remove the temporary bridge and place your permanent one. We can also make any adjustments needed for a secure and comfortable fit.
